In practice, it was used mainly in: astronomy – for observing and charting the sky,shipping – to determine the latitude of a ship. Its name derives from the fact that in the best known version of this sundial, the path of the pearl in both tropics traced two lines that resembled the hood worn by Capuchin monks. Its origin dates back to the 15th century, although it is not possible to say for sure. Quadrant is made of zamak (zinc-aluminum alloy), set on an elegant wooden base.
