An unofficial world champion from 1843 to 1851, he was not only engaged in the practical game of chess. He was also an organizer of chess life, a journalist and author of chess manuals, a recognized theoretician of the game of chess and a creator of rules for the game itself and the way it is played. Beginning in 1845, he edited a chess column in the Illustrated London News newspaper for the next 29 years, becoming the world's most influential chess columnist. In 1847 he published Chess-Player's Handbook, the most famous of his chess book series. In 1849 Staunton signed a set of chess runners, designed by Nathaniel Cook and manufactured by John Jaques. He recommended the runners in his chess paper.
